Abstract: |
In the process of crowdsourcing tournament, the firm’s managers seeking product design (seeker) often face the dilemma whether to provide in-process feedback to participants. However, the existing research is unclear about how feedback affects participant behaviors (subsequent participation intensity and submission quality). Using the panel data from the online design crowdsourcing platform, it analyzed the impact of in-process feedback on the participants’ subsequent participation intensity and submission quality in a large-scale and dynamic product design crowdsourcing tournaments. The results show that providing in-process feedback to participants can motivate mid-performance participants to increase participation intensity, but by revealing the difference in design quality, in-process feedback can inhibit the participation intensity both of the leaders and lags; in-process feedback can also promote participants to improve and optimize the quality of subsequent submissions, and possibly offset the adverse impact on participation intensity. The conclusions not only reveal the role of in-process feedback, but also inspire managers to trade-off the impact of in-process feedback on subsequent participation intensity and submission quality. |
