Abstract: |
Existing studies emphasize that female directors contribute to corporate social responsibility(CSR), however, the psychosocial mechanisms and contextual factors related to this relationship have not yet been clarified. Based on feminist care ethics and social role theory, it revealed that the external situation is the key factor that affects the role of female directors. The empirical research of China’s private listed manufacturing enterprises shows that although the participation of female directors overall promotes CSR, this effect depends on its institutional and organizational field. When the degree of gender inequality is low, female directors show a positive role on CSR, while when the degree of gender inequality is high, the effect is inhibitory. Meanwhile, female directors significantly promote the performance of CSR in family firms. In addition, non-key female directors impact more obviously on CSR than key female directors. It deepens the discussion on the relationship between women’s participation and CSR, and finds that gender bias is still the main factor limiting the role of “She-power” in China, which has both theoretical and practical significance to the female leadership characteristics and the sustainable development of enterprises. |
