Digital technology innovation serves as a pivotal force propelling China’s economy towards achieving high-quality development， while also playing a crucial role in encouraging enterprises to fulfill their social governance responsibilities and adopt sustainable development strategies. Based on stakeholder theory and resource base theory， it took A-share listed companies from 2009 to 2022 as a sample to explore the impact and mechanism of digital technology innovation on corporate ESG performance. It confirms that digital technological innovation can significantly enhance corporate ESG performance. Mechanism analysis shows that digital technological innovation can enhance ESG performance by improving production and operation efficiency， reducing financial and operational risks and alleviating external environmental constraints. Heterogeneity analysis shows that digital technology innovations are more effective in enhancing ESG performance in regions with well-developed digital infrastructures， strong intellectual property protection， non-heavy pollution and high-tech firms. By categorizing the degree of digital technology innovation， it finds that both disruptive and incremental digital technologies are effective in improving corporate ESG performance， and that disruptive digital technologies are more useful in digital product manufacturing， while incremental digital technologies are more prominent in the digital efficiency improvement industry. These findings offer micro-empirical evidence that digital technological innovation enhances corporate ESG performance， providing valuable insights for firms aiming to strengthen their digital innovation capabilities and implement ESG practices amid digitization.
