    企业开展数字化转型存在高度波动,很多企业在前期大量投入,但逐渐失去动能甚至半途而废。已有研究从能力视角展开研究,但能力本身相对稳定,难以快速改变,因而无法解释数字化转型的高度波动性,本文尝试从动力视角进行分析。基于企业行为理论的绩效反馈视角,通过分析绩效反馈(包括绩效落差和绩效顺差)对企业数字化转型的影响来考察数字化转型动力机制,采用2007—2021年中国制造业592家上市公司3 694个样本的非平衡面板数据进行实证检验。研究发现,在搜索机制和生存机制的影响下,绩效落差与企业开展数字化转型之间呈现倒U形关系;受风险规避机制与自噬机制的影响,绩效顺差负向影响企业开展数字化转型。相较于民营企业,国有企业绩效落差与其数字化转型的倒U形关系更弱,但是绩效顺差与其数字化转型的负向关系更强。本文采用短期可变的绩效从动力视角解释了数字化转型高度波动的原因,并提出了绩效反馈影响数字化转型的4种动力机制,有助于更深入地理解企业数字化转型的前因。

    Abstract:

    Enterprises often exhibit substantial volatility when pursuing digital transformation. Many firms make substantial upfront investments, but gradually lose momentum, or even abandon digital transformation midway. Existing research has primarily examined this phenomenon from the capability perspective. However, organizational capabilities are relatively stable and difficult to change rapidly, which limits their ability to explain the pronounced volatility observed in digital transformation efforts. It adopted a performance feedback perspective to examine how performance feedback, including performance shortfalls and performance above aspiration, shapes firms’ engagement in digital transformation, thereby uncovering the motivational mechanisms driving such behavior. It made an empirical analysis using an unbalanced panel of 3 694 firm-year observations from 592 listed manufacturing firms in China between 2007 and 2021. The result finds that under the joint influence of problemistic search and survival threat, performance shortfalls exhibit an inverted U-shaped relationship with firms’ digital transformation; performance above aspirations negatively affects firms’ digital transformation, driven by risk aversion and cannibalization mechanisms. Moreover, ownership type has a moderating effect. Compared with private firms, state-owned enterprises(SOEs)display a weaker inverted U-shaped relationship between performance shortfalls and digital transformation, but a stronger negative relationship between performance above aspirations and digital transformation. By adopting the short-term variable performance feedback from a motivation-based perspective, it explains why digital transformation exhibits high volatility and identifies four motivational mechanisms through which performance feedback shapes digital transformation, and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the antecedents of firms’ digital transformation.
